Saturday we went on an odyssey to get a pig. It was 387 miles one way, and we hit a snowstorm in Iowa that caused a lot of accidents. We left home at 5:45 am and got back home at 9:30 pm with this scruffy, puny pig.
Sunday morning we weighed her, and she only weighed 23 pounds. She’s five months old. We wormed her, and will worm her again next weekend just to be sure she is parasite free. These pics were taken Sunday night, you can see how small she is next to the dog crage and sitting in the feed pan.
She is a smart little pig and is already getting over her fear of me, she knows I bring the food. We set up a stall in the barn for her so she’ll be quarantined from the other pigs, and also warmer in the cold weather of late November.
Today I can see she is already filling out and looks brighter, and even her coat is looking better in just two days. We’re feeding her ground corn and oats twice a day, plus all the grass hay she wants. I picked a half a pail of acorns on Sunday for her, and she gets a couple a day just for a treat. I think by spring she’ll have caught up a bit to where she should be, and hopefully by next fall we’ll be breeding her to Seymour.
