We had stopped using the wood boiler for about a week, but have it going once again. It had warmed up a bit and most of the snow had melted. Then it got cold again, and today we got a few more inches of snow.
Spring is close! We’ve heard the sandhill cranes, seen and heard geese, and yesterday I saw a robin in the yard. The horses are shedding like mad.
The 10th calf arrived last Thursday. One more to go, but the cow isn’t too close, so it might be a couple weeks. I’ve been trying to pet the white faced heifer calf once a day, so she’ll stay half ways tame. The cow isn’t crazy about this, so I try to time it when she’s off eating hay and the calf is resting.
We seperated out the cow that lost her calf, and the cow that isn’t bred. They are now in with the two yearling heifers. They’ll all be fattened up a bit and then we’ll decide if all four will be butchered, or only three. Every cow has to pay for itself in one way or another.
